The Data Center Capacity Specialist is a developing role, responsible for assessing, planning, and managing the capacity and resources of physical facilities, particularly data centres and related infrastructure. The primary objective of this role is to ensure that the organisation's facilities can support current and future IT needs while maintaining efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Regularly assesses the current capacity of data centres, office spaces, and other facilities to determine their ability to meet existing and anticipated IT requirements.

  • Collaborates with IT teams and other stakeholders to forecast future capacity needs based on business growth, technology trends, and project requirements.

  • Develops and maintains space utilisation plans that optimise the use of available floor space, including data centre server racks, office workstations, and support infrastructure.

  • Allocates resources such as power, cooling, and networking infrastructure to ensure they align with the demand for IT services and equipment.

  • Prepares budgets for capacity expansion projects and ongoing facility operations, taking into account costs associated with space, power, cooling, and hardware procurement.

  • Identifies opportunities for efficiency improvements, including consolidation, virtualisation, and energy-saving initiatives, to maximize the use of existing resources.

  • Generates reports and dashboards that provide insights into facility capacity utilisation, future requirements, and potential bottlenecks.

  • Develops plans and strategies for scaling facilities in response to changing IT needs, including expansion, consolidation, or relocation.

  • Ensures that facility planning and capacity management align with industry standards, compliance requirements, and best practices.

  • Assesses and mitigates risks related to capacity shortages, resource constraints, and facility vulnerabilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:

  • Applies learned techniques, as well as company policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues

  • Analytical and quantitative skills to assess capacity data, perform forecasting, and make data-driven decisions

  • Familiarity with data centre technologies, including server hardware, networking, power distribution, and cooling systems

  • Developing proficiency in budgeting, cost analysis, and financial planning

  • Project management skills to oversee capacity expansion projects and resource allocation initiatives

  • Good communication and collaboration skills to work with IT teams, facility managers, and stakeholders

  • Strong problem-solving abilities to address capacity-related challenges and bottlenecks

Academic Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in facilities management, IT management, engineering, or a related field

  • Industry certifications such as Certified Facility Manager (CFM), Project Management Professional (PMP), or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) can be beneficial

Required Experience:

  • Moderate level of experience in facilities capacity planning, data centre management, or IT infrastructure planning, with a strong understanding of IT equipment and facility infrastructure

  • Moderate level of experienced in managing and optimising space, power, cooling, and network resources

  • Moderate level of proficiency in forecasting future capacity needs based on business growth, technology trends, and project requirements

  • Moderate level of proficiency in capacity management tools and software, including capacity planning software and data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) systems

  • Moderate level of experience in computer-aided design (CAD) software for facility layouts and space utilisation studies
