Our Opportunity:

The Schwab Center of Financial Research (SCFR), Director, Tax-Focused Financial Planning, Research & Commentary role is a single-contributor position who provides advice, written commentary, presentations, and thought leadership on tax-aware investing and planning strategies for Schwab reps and clients.

Examples include:

  • What do I need to know about current tax law and regulatory changes, as an individual investor, at different wealth levels?

  • What changed this year in the tax code, to help be plan and lower my tax bill?

  • How do I make smart financial planning decisions, to reduce my tax bill and maximize my after-tax wealth?

  • What should I do to invest smartly, using tax-efficient investments, tax-loss harvesting and other strategies?

  • What do I need to know about different investment accounts, such as IRAs, Roths, SEP-IRAs, 529s, HSAs and other accounts from a tax perspective?

  • What do I need to know taxes as they relate to the use of annuities, insurance, and other products or strategies?

  • What estate planning, charitable giving, and other tax-related strategies should I consider to achieve my financial goals, and maximize the impact of my wealth, after taxes?

What you’ll do:

Perspectives on these topics should support tax-aware financial planning and investing, for individual investors, at all wealth levels.

The director will serve as the primary Schwab tax expert and thought leader, as part of a small research team, providing a centralized point of view, for all reps and partners. Other teams will deliver that advice to clients.

The director will also support business partners, including Schwab’s asset management, financial planning, product development, and training teams as a subject matter expert on tax topics. They should be a good team player, able to add expertise and improve outcomes for reps and clients.

The director will serve as a spokesperson on tax topics. This includes public relations, media, video, podcasts, and client events – either as a speaker, or thought leader. The should be able to simplify financial planning and taxes, to be accurate, but also accessible and engaging, to multiple audiences.

Schwab’s goal is to help our clients own their financial lives. What steps can they take to achieve this, as it relates to tax-aware investing and financial planning? The director position be a partner to help set that direction for Schwab partners and clients.

  2. What recent tax law changes should employees and clients understand?

  3. What are the best types of accounts to use for various investment goals and why?

  4. Should I convert a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA?

  5. Does a backdoor Roth IRA contribution make sense and why?

  6. What do I need to know about taxes on some of these income sources?How can I understand all of the above to create a tax-efficient savings and investment plan?

  7. Investment income

  8. Capital gains

  9. Mutual funds and ETFs

  10. Municipal bonds

  11. Retirement account distributions

  12. Social Security

  13. Insurance products or annuities

  14. Which investment expenses are tax-deductible?

  15. What should I know about my investment cost basis?

  16. A tax-efficient retirement distribution plan?

  17. What should I know about charitable giving and give taxes?

  18. What does the AMT mean?

  19. What can I do about it?

  20. How do I manage RMDs, Social Security, and other income sources to manage tax brackets in retirement?

  21. What should Schwab client facing employees and clients know about current tax proposals?

  22. What’s the best way to use tax-loss harvesting rules to lower taxes on investment earnings from a diversified portfolio?

  23. Where should investors locate various investments and assets by tax status to increase ending balances and manage withdrawals?

  24. What research and quantitative support can be provided to justify these recommendations?


  1. Write regular articles on and other locations on tax topics

  2. Review content written by others on, On Investment magazine, and other locations for accuracy and consistent point of view

Consulting assignments:

  1. Serve as subject matter expert to Schwab Advice Policy Committee on tax issues

  2. Work with asset management teams on design characteristics of tax efficient portfolios and tax-loss harvesting strategies

  3. Work with retail business on website and offer design

Public-facing activities:

What you have:

  • Ten years of relevant work experience, preferably with or on behalf of individual investors

  • CPA, PFS, CFP, or equivalent(s) with a specific, demonstrated focus on individual tax planning.

  • Strong research, writing, and public speaking skills, focused on personal tax. Examples will be requested from prior work.

  • Motivated, self-directed leader, with the discipline to manage priorities and create a disciplined research and communication plan.

  • Team player, with flexibility to work with business partners to deliver tax-aware planning to clients.
