The Walt Disney Company Digital News Editor- Politics (ABC News Digital) in Washington, District Of Columbia

This News Editor, Politics at ABC News Digital is responsible for working closely with the Washington Editor to edit text stories and coordinate coverage of DC-based stories and politics, including collaborating closely with the senior Digital editorial leaders and the DC editorial teams, including at the White House and on Capitol Hill, and the Newsgathering division as a whole.

This editor is also responsible for coordinating with our Audience Development team for effective social media and platforms coverage to enhance the exposure of Digital’s content.

This editor is also expected to coordinate with the teams responsible for videos, photos and graphics -- exercising discretion on the accomplishment of tasks.

The ideal candidate is someone who has experience handling or leading breaking news coverage, is a self-starter and does well under deadline.

The hours are generally from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET on Sundays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, though the hours may occasionally change depending on events and coverage needs.

Team members are expected to work in a hybrid model, based in the ABC News bureau in DC.

What You Will Do:

  • Line edit DC-based and politics stories in coordination with other editors.

  • Work with senior editorial leaders at Digital, the DC editorial teams and newsgathering team to ensure robust and timely coverage, including coordination with "This Week," "The View" and ABCN Live. ​

  • Coordinate election coverage in conjunction with the Washington Editor and the senior editorial leaders.

  • Coordinate DC-based and politics futures/enterprise coverage.

  • Coordinate with the Digital video team to ensure robust video coverage with text stories.

  • Assist with live coverage of DC-based and politics stories, including anchoring the live blog during special events.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • At least 5 years of hard news writing/editing experience, including breaking news.

  • Proven ability to write clean copy and edit on a deadline.

  • Track record of working on DC-based and politics stories for a major online news organization.

  • Experience with web publishing and AP style.

  • Track record of collaborating with reporters and editors of all experience levels in a fast-paced newsroom.

  • Comfortable knowledge of DC and political stories.

  • Experience with Legal review and News Standards and Practices teams.

Education:

  • BA or BS from a 4-year accredited college or university or equivalent experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in journalism from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience.
