Position Summary:

The primary job duty of the Postdoctoral Researcher for Dr. Szewczyk position is to lead two NASA funded spaceflight biology research projects studying how C. elegans physiology changes in response to spaceflight. Attending NASA space biology project meetings, maintaining the laboratory and equipment, conducting experiments, and assisting in grant and manuscript preparation are all expected job duties. The qualified candidate is expected to independently set up and perform experiments, collect and analyze data, and have experience writing lab protocols. The ideal candidate will have informatics experience, and a desire to pursue an independent research career. The position is for three years with options to extend.

Position Accountabilities:

  • Plans and conducts original research projects within the laboratory, and at NASA specified facilities, that are within the framework of the PI’s research focus. Research will focus on health in space using age and neuromuscular disease as analogues for changes in health in space.

  • Works collaboratively with other external researchers, research staff, and students at the direction of the PI.

  • Maintains accurate records of research findings and provides statistical analysis of the data results.

  • Assists with reviews of grants and manuscripts. Assists PI with grant applications. The ideal candidate applies for independent funding no later than the second year of position.

  • Prepares manuscripts for publication at the direction of the PI.

  • Presents research findings to collaborators and at professional meetings.

  • Mentors medical, graduate, and undergraduate students as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent in related technical or scientific discipline

  • ABD applications will be accepted

  • Must not hold a sole passport from a country on the NASA designated country list that are ineligible for work on NASA sites (currently: Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria)
