Job Overview

The Sign Language Interpreter facilitates the provision of care for deaf and/or hard of hearing patients and families through the coordination and provision of sign language services. The interpreter will provide neutral, accurate interpretations in American Sign Language (ASL) in a medical setting with considerable knowledge of medical terminology and adheres to sound principles and ethics of patient representation and medical interpretations. Manages/refers patient concerns to appropriate individuals and works with them as necessary. Tracks and reports activities to management.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Experience: Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English language with a minimum of three (3) years of sign language interpreting experience. Certification(s): Certified as a National Interpreter by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is required at the time of hire

Responsibilities

POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE No direct patient care, but will provide interpretive services to patients and families of all ages. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform. Provides full level sign language interpretation services for patients, families, and team members. Participates in interviews and evaluations of new hires by providing feedback and observations to the manager. Assists the department manager in completing assessments on ongoing training and overall interpretation processes. Participates in department programs or assigned projects as applicable. Maintains competency with medical terminology by specialty. Utilizes the hospital's electronic medical record system, including documentation regarding appointments, accessing patient medical records, provi e statistics and other duties specific to the department.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Intermediate to advanced knowledge of and ability to utilize medical terminology. Knowledge of basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships. SCOPE AND LEVEL Guidelines: Guidelines are generally but not always clearly applicable, requiring the employee to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, interpret precedents, adapt standard practices to differing situations, and recommend alternative actions in situations without precedent.
