Our Opportunity:

Corporate Legal Services provides legal advice to all aspects of Schwab's business. This in-house counsel position will be in our Institutional & Retail Legal Team within Corporate Legal Services. This team serves as enterprise counsel for the client-facing businesses of Schwab, including Advisor Services, Investor Services, and Corporate and Retirement Services, and serves as counsel for Schwab’s Operational Services business which supports all of the client-facing business units. This Legal Counsel Director position is within the Operational Services legal team.

What you’ll do:

  • Serve as counsel for the Operational Services business, which supports nearly all areas of the broker-dealer, including equity and fixed income trading, cashiering, account open, corporate actions, margin services, estates, mutual fund custody and operations, custody of alternative investment and specialized products, restricted stock services, operations control and other operational aspects related to servicing Schwab’s clients.

  • The right candidate will be comfortable providing legal advice and business assistance on a wide variety of issues; will be collaborative with the business and his/her partners in Legal; and will be responsive to our business clients.

  • Since Operational Services is involved in nearly every aspect of the broker-dealer, there is significant room for growth and additional subject-matter expertise.

  • This Legal Counsel Director will also be expected to assume other assigned tasks and projects in addition to his or her regular work schedule and to assist other attorneys on the team as circumstances may dictate.

What you have:

  • At least seven to ten years of law firm.

  • In-house counsel experience with a financial services company that includes broker-dealer and investment adviser matters, or experience with an industry regulator.

  • A detailed knowledge of broker-dealer operations is required.

  • The ideal candidate will have an understanding of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and with market regulation.

  • Prior in-house experience at a broker-dealer would be a plus, as would prior experience working with or working for industry regulators.

  • Excellent verbal and written briefing skills and the ability to advise the business on day-to-day issues in a fast-paced environment, with an eye on regulatory changes and risk management, are important skills for this position.

  • J.D. degree and bar admission.
