Overview and Essential Functions

Pauley Construction has a great opportunity available! We are currently seeking an experienced Fiber Splicer I to report out of our Durango, CO location. This is for long-term continuous employment. Overview:

The Fiber Splicer I position includes various physical requirements and ability to distinguish all colors used in telephone cable; ability to work aloft from ladders, platforms, poles (with climbers); and bucket trucks. Applicants must possess the ability to lift, carry, set up and secure 28 foot ladder; the ability to load/transfer standard nitrogen cylinders. Position requires heavy lifting, pulling, placing, and digging. Work schedules are typically 5 days per week, 8 hours per day, or could be required to perform stand by duties or on call work assignments. The ideal candidate for this position should have experience working in and around manholes and handholes.

We work on large cable transfers, paper cable, pic cable, maintenance, road moves and more. We work on all cables sizes, types and environments. We work regularly on DS0 and DS1 circuits, Adtran and Calix test and turn-up and more. Pauley values craftsmanship and reliability very highly. We strive for satisfactory customer service by performing such duties as: cable maintenance, installation, removal, rearrangement and maintenance of single line and associated telecom/apparatus equipment, including cross connections to switching equipment and single-line and multichannel subscriber carrier.

The Fiber Splicer position will be expected to work on, splice, replace, troubleshoot and place both copper and fiber wire as needed.

Responsibilities:

What you’ll do…

  • You will, with guidance, splice overhead, underground or submarine multiple conductor cables.

  • You will, climb utility poles or towers, utilizes truck mounted lift-bucket or descends into underground vaults.

  • You will cut sheath from installed cable to gain access to defective cable connections.as well as cuts and peels sheath and insulation from newly installed cable and conductors.

  • You will Test (traces or phase out) each conductor to identify corresponding conductors in adjoining cables, using test lamp or bell system.

  • You will read and interpret (i.e. mechanical, electrical, digital) drawings, maps, blueprints diagrams, etc.

    Qualifications:

    Who we are looking for…

  • You will have 0-1 or more years experience as a fiber splicer with experience on outside plant or system installations while working from blueprints, specifications, and system documentation

  • You will have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You are able to lift up to 80 lbs

    Apprentice/Entry level

  • Basic understanding of splicing principles or ability to learn

  • Basic experience with electrical work

  • Experience working from hand-holes and manholes

  • Must pass company drug testing

  • Must know the color code system for cable pairs

  • Ability to work in confined spaces

  • Possesses strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Ability to work with internal and external customers

  • Must have strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate with product vendors and customers

  • Ability to work from oral or written instructions and plan work without direct supervision

  • Possesses proficient personal computer operations skills

  • Comply with all safety regulations and meet safety requirements to maintain a successful safety record

  • Assume all duties as assigned

    Other Requirements:

  • Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age to operate company equipment or to drive company vehicles

  • Must be able to pass a background check and company drug screening.

  • Must be able to attend and pass all company required training as needed.

  • May be required to work over-time; after hours; on weekends, for emergencies or be on-call as work is needed to ensure work is completed.

  • May include working nights and holidays as needed.

  • May be required to travel in state or overnight as necessary to meet business and job requirements.

  • Regular and timely attendance is an essential function of this position.

  • Duties outlined in this position will require the employee to stand, crouch, climb sit, bend, use hands and fingers to handle or feel as well as reaching with hands and arms to spaces both high and low.   • Employees performing these job functions may be working from heights of 3 feet to 4 feet off the ground with proper safety equipment and/or personnel.

  • The noise level in the work environment for this position is moderate.

  • Employees performing functions of this position are regularly exposed to outside weather conditions which can include but is not limited to: extreme heat and cold temperatures; inclement weather such as rain, snow, sleet and dust as well as adverse driving conditions including wet roads, icy roads, and fog.

  • Employees performing these job functions may be required to lift or move up to 10 up to 50 pounds.

  • Employees in this job classification may be exposed to dust, fumes or other airborne pathogens.

  • Employees may be exposed to toxic or corrosive chemicals as well as moving machinery parts and pieces.

Pay Range:

The Fiber Splicer I position pays an hourly wage of $26.00 - $35.00 / per hour, depending on experience.
