City of Eastpointe Adult & Technical Services Librarian in Eastpointe, Michigan

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Library Director, performs responsible and varied administrative and professional library work related to planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Adult Department and Circulation Department.  Supervises the entire library, including personnel and facilities, in the absence of the Library Director and the Youth's Services Librarian.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Trains and supervises staff, makes job assignments and verifies that assignments are carried out properly.
  2. Assists in supervising circulation staff.
  3. Schedules reference.
  4. Submits to the Library Director purchase order requisitions for Adult Department, equipment, and other proposed purchases.
  5. Systems Manager for cooperative computer system (Sirsi/Dynix).
  6. Selects materials for withdrawal from the adult print and non-print collections and assigns part-time reference staff a section of the library to weed; supervises the organization, maintenance, preservation, withdrawal, and disposal of materials.
  7. Shifts at both Reference Desk and Circulation Desk.
  8. Serves as the Librarian-in-Charge of the building, when assigned. 
  9. Provides reference and reader's advisory guidance to patrons.
  10. Assists adults in using the online catalog and other electronic tools and resources; assists and instructs patrons in using library services, equipment, and facilities.
  11. Plans, organizes, and supervises programs for adults in order to encourage reading, viewing, and listening of library materials.
  12. Creates bibliographies, user guides, promotional materials, and publicity spotlighting adult and special collections, services, and programs.
  13. Creates displays and assigns displays to part-time staff to enhance the library experience and to promote use of library resources.
  14. Maintains knowledge of the automated circulation and technical services systems and assists with circulation and technical services tasks, as needed.
  15. Develops outreach activities to promote library programming, resources and services. 
  16. Promotes new and existing library resources and services in person and through print, web and other media.
  17. Prepares regular narrative and statistical reports for the Library Director.
  18. Puts together monthly newsletter.
  19. Interprets library policies and procedures to the public in a customer-friendly manner.
  20. Performs other duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications

Requirements include the following:

Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution required.

Minimum of 3 years' experience working with adult library services, resources, and online searching preferred.  Some supervisory experience necessary.

Ability to perform duties in an office environment.

Ability to work in an environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.

Ability to work under stress from deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities, and conditions.

Ability to operate computers with proficiency using library software, word processing, and the Internet.

Ability to view a computer monitor and/or operate a keyboard
