In the DNR, a Regional Fleet Supervisor coordinates the delivery of cradle-to-grave services for fleet and other departmental equipment in Grand Rapids for the Northeast Region. Duties include supervising and managing maintenance, repairs, and up-fitting of departmental equipment accomplished largely at the regional shop, but also through vendors throughout the region. The position also oversees and coordinates the replacement and modification of fleet vehicles and equipment.

This position supervises personnel, and is responsible for managing vehicle and equipment assignments, scheduling staff and equipment, and ensuring cost-efficient acquisition of supplies and parts. This position provides leadership and direction so that fleet services are implemented in a safe, cost effective, customer-focused, and sustainable manner. This position is expected to be the regional expert on all equipment matters, ranging from equipment assignments and usage to billing reconciliations, as well as transport. A safety focus is essential.

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform day-to-day supervisory functions to ensure efficient and orderly operation is maintained within the department.

  • Coordinate the scheduling of fleet operations and equipment maintenance, repairs, or replacement. Schedule commercial and internal equipment inspections, make corrections, and advise regional staff of correct procedures and policies.

  • Maintain proficiency and current knowledge of safety policies, equipment policies, M5 database, and general DNR training. Ensure employees meet annual training requirements and equipment operators are certified to the equipment issued and operated.

  • Manage new vehicle inspections licensing and installation of special equipment. Document and file records of distribution, coordinate with vendors, and evaluate replaced equipment for use as loan vehicles, auction items, or salvage.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of skilled experience involving significant responsibility for equipment management and repair. A two-year degree or certificate in Fleet Management, Maintenance, or closely related field may substitute for six (6) months of experience.

  • Supervisory or leadwork experience in an automotive repair shop. Experience should demonstrate the ability to oversee shop operations while meeting expectations for productivity, quality, and goal accomplishments.

  • Ability to treat employees inclusively in the areas of accommodation, accessibility, scheduling, expectations, individualized resource needs, training, and development.

  • Ability to obtain the following ASE Certifications within 12 months of hire:

  • T8 - Preventative Maintenance Inspection.

  • C1 - Automotive Service Consultant.

  • This position requires a Class A Driver's License (CDL), passing a pre-employment drug screen and participation in the DNR ongoing random screening program. Otherwise, qualified applicants who do not have a valid Class A will be allowed up to 12 months to acquire one, as a condition of employment.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Commercial Vehicle Inspection certification within 12 months of hire.

  • Knowledge and understanding of operational maintenance/repair procedures and inspection requirements sufficient to maintain and repair a large fleet with a wide variety of road and off-road equipment.

  • Customer service skills sufficient to communicate expectations and requirements to internal and external customers and to build and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Communication skills to effectively present information to a wide variety of clientele with diverse backgrounds.

  • Human relation skills sufficient to comprehend the work of various programs, supervisors, and managers so as to deliver effective and efficient service to clients, as well as in obtaining support and agreement for necessary policies and procedures.

  • Strong computer/software skills sufficient to effectively develop, modify, and utilize reports, spreadsheets, and databases.

  • Ability to recommend acceptance of contract work, develop cost estimates, manage fiscal resources, complete work within budget limitations, and account for expenditures.

  • Knowledge of safety principles and hazardous materials management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of professional level supervisory experience operating a medium sized repair facility.

  • Formal education in Fleet Management, Equipment Management, Automotive Management, or a closely related field.

  • Current ASE certifications (T8, C1)

  • Experience working in a field environment, managing, and maintaining equipment used for natural resource management in state parks, forestry, wildlife, fisheries, and enforcement operations.

  • Experience and expertise with "green" shop practices.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class A Driver's License with a clear driving record, in addition to passing a pre-employment drug screen and participation in the DNR ongoing random screening program.
