Job Description:

We are seeking an intermediate technical editor who will help our experts prepare communications deliverables for engineering and architectural projects in the water, environmental, and transportation industries. You’ll complete substantive editorial reviews for federal government deliverables (e.g., planning and design reports, environmental reports, public outreach materials, PowerPoint/presentations, etc.) In addition to verifying spelling, punctuation, and grammar, our technical editors advocate for the reader/client to ensure content has one voice and is written at the appropriate level of complexity, identify errors in language and enhance it for clarity, fact-check sources, and confirm adherence to the CDM Smith Style Guide. You will work with a team of editors, graphic designers, and document formatters.

We are open to remote work schedules for this full-time position.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit basic to highly complex technical documents (draft and final versions) involving specialized and scientific language. Edit documents for spelling, typographical, and grammatical errors.

  • Edit documents following established style guides, such as The Chicago Manual of Style, CDM Smith Style Guide, and/or client style guides.

  • Familiarity with federal government style guides and 508 compliance.

  • Produce quality work in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines and client expectations for quality and accuracy.

  • Regularly prioritize work and execute well under time pressure.

  • Query authors on any copyright concerns, such as permissions for image use. Verify facts and identify inconsistencies.

  • Give writers feedback to improve clarity and make complex topics easy to understand. Build and maintain writer-editor relationships.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Technical Writing, Technical Communication, or Communications.

  • 3 years of related experience.

  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical services or consulting industry experience (i.e., medical, science, research fields)

  • Experience with U.S. federal government documents

  • Impeccable attention to detail

  • Client-service focused

  • Able to manage expectations and deadlines

  • Industry awareness

  • Independent worker

  • Engineering industry experience

  • Public speaking skills; will need to present to groups and project teams occasionally

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software (e.g., Word [essential], Excel [preferred], PowerPoint [preferred]). Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud software (e.g., Acrobat).

  • Proficient in electronic editing using Word and Acrobat. Expert knowledge of English language.

  • Detail-oriented with impeccable spelling and grammar skills.

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal writer clients.

Background Check and Drug Testing Information:

CDM Smith Inc. and its divisions and subsidiaries (hereafter collectively referred to as “CDM Smith”) reserves the right to require background checks including criminal, employment, education, licensure, etc. as well as credit and motor vehicle when applicable for certain positions. Additional Compensation:

All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
