Basic Function:

To provide leadership for a unit within Information Technology in a manner consistent with the university mission; to serve as an advocate for innovative and effective use of academic computing and related technology at Kent State University and Regional Campuses. Reports to Executive Director, Information Technology.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Plan and direct all department activities through a team of administrative, professional, and support staff; oversee personnel administration. Establish goals, objectives, and strategies; develop and implement programs and activities to accomplish goals, improve the image of the university, and attract and retain students. Provide leadership in development and implementation of computing operations. Oversee technology support and planning for computing and communication technology. Ensure that client needs and priorities are understood and met. Research trends in instructional technology and make recommendations. Plan, monitor, and maintain department budget and approve operating expenses. Serve on various department, division, and university committees; represent the university concerning academic computing and related technology. Fulfill responsibilities of human resource management including equal employment opportunity, affirmative action and employee development. Provide leadership of a department, unit or major function and/or direct supervision over administrative/professional employees. Perform related duties as assigned.

POSITION SPECIFIC TECHNICAL AREAS MIGHT INCLUDE: Incumbents assigned to administrative computing may be responsible for: - Overseeing software systems analysis and programming activity for the university; - Management of database administration; - Management of systems administration; and - Management of Enterprise and Client Server application design and development. Incumbents assigned to engineering and operations may be responsible for: - Management of network services and computer operations; - Overseeing all telecommunications and voice networks for the university; and - Client services. Incumbents assigned to new media may be responsible for: - Overseeing all forms of digital information and communication including multi-media development, distance learning development, web technologies and graphic design.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or related field; or Bachelor's degree plus 4 years related experience in addition to experience listed below. Plus 10 years experience in IT, including 4 years in a direct management role managing Administrative Computing and/or Eng & Operations and/or New Media functions (depending on area of responsibility). Including a minimum of 3 years in strategic analytical oversight.
