The Opportunity:

The Vice President, Strategic Sourcing & Category Management is responsible for firm-wide sourcing for Charles Schwab & Co. and its affiliates.

The Vice President is responsible for the management and supervision of the firm’s strategic sourcing and category management program. In this role, the VP works closely with senior business leaders to develop and sustain short and long-term sourcing strategies to achieve the best value for the firm, encompassing pricing, business terms, and third-party risk.

Third parties play a strategically important role at Schwab, with over $1.5B in annual spending. The Sourcing group negotiates commercial terms and aims for best-in-class pricing, also considering the vendor’s risk profile. The Sourcing organization is structured into four main categories: Professional Services (including Offshore), Marketing, Technology, and Shared Services. Each category is led by a Managing Director and supported by Senior Sourcing Managers. The Sourcing organization, in coordination with business owners and Corporate Legal Services, drives commercial term negotiations for multi-million dollar agreements potentially over multiple years.

The Vice President will also be responsible for meeting and adhering to regulatory and third-party risk requirements in the planning, risk assessment, and contracting processes. The documentation of appropriate procedures and execution of those procedures plays a key role in managing third-party risk for the business and in meeting regulatory expectations around third-party risk management. The Vice President brings advanced negotiation, communication, and influencing skills, coupled with an understanding of the business’s key objectives, to lead the strategic use of third parties to optimize outcomes for our clients, stockholders, and employees. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Successfully negotiate complex deals requires a careful balance among various stakeholder needs – the business, legal, risk groups, and the vendor – whose priorities are not always aligned.

  • Effectively provide guidance and direction to his/her Managing Directors, Sourcing Managers, and business partners.

  • Work with the key lines of business to develop category plans for each of the major spend categories.

  • Collaborate with senior leaders to develop short and long-term sourcing strategies and category plans.

  • Develop and own the vendor selection RFP/RFQ process and leads the sourcing teams across all categories to continuously drive cost negotiation in order to achieve best-in-class pricing for all services and products.

  • Collaborate with senior level business partners and Corporate Legal Services to negotiate contract terms with third parties, also factoring in input from various risk groups.

  • Extensive planning by definition for the Sourcing and Category Management function.

  • Assess vendor performance and ability to meet the company’s future needs, objectives and targets; align category plans with the business’s strategy.

  • Lead a team to develop strategic sourcing and category plans for all major categories across the firm (Technology, Marketing, Professional Services, and Shared Services).

  • Lead an onshore Strategic Sourcing and Category Management program.

  • Lead a team of Senior Managers and support personnel responsible for strategic sourcing, commercial terms negotiation, and category management across the firm with specific goals for value creation.

  • Exude strong business acumen and judgment, influencing and relationship skills, a clear understanding of vendor inherent and residual risks.

  • Leadership to drive and execute deals under pressure and tight deadlines.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Bachelor’s degree in analytical and/or business field of study required; Master’s preferred.

  • 15+ years of relevant work experience, preferably in a customer-centric industry.

  • 10+ years of leadership experience in a large-scale operation diversified financial services enviornment.

  • Strong financial and business acumen and the proven ability to develop strategies to drive transformational change.

  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize and analyze relevant data and information to make informed recommendations and influence business outcomes.

  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills and the proven ability to build relationships lead and influence at all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated track record of hiring the right talent, developing and engaging a diverse and high-performing leadership team, succession management, managing performance and driving a culture of accountability.

  • Explains specifically how changes in competitors, clients, and market segments affect own business or institution.

  • Translates broad corporate strategies and complex topics into clear, specific objectives and plans.

  • Collaborates and openly debates with team to manage projects, solve problems, discuss challenging issues, or learn more about critical issues as a group.

  • Collaborates with employees to establish clear, challenging performance goals and metrics for the year.

  • Designs a performance management process to monitor projects and deliver results to exceed expectations.

  • Negotiates with a genuine give-and-take approach, acting as a true peer where decisions are shared.

  • Identifies opportunities to build relationships which will help others achieve their objectives and reaches out across the enterprise.

  • Results oriented leader with demonstrated change management experience.
