Los Alamos National Laboratory Solutions Architect 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

As part of the Associate Lab Directorate of Weapons Production (ALDWP), the work we do in the Production Support Services Division (PSS) directly affects mission success across Los Alamos National Laboratory.

As a Solutions Architect 3/4 for the Online Collaboration and Infrastructure team, you will serve as the SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) supporting multiple SQL database environments. The DBA will be responsible for the configuration and maintenance of ALDWP's unclassified and classified SQL Databases, to include installation and configuration, database provisioning, maintaining servers and backups, database tuning and monitoring, securing data and access to the SQL Servers and/or databases. As the DBA, you will support the System Administrators and Software Systems Development Team in PSS-1. This work will be performed in a growing fast-paced environment, providing technical solutions in support of programmatic needs and mission milestones. Furthermore, participant on a Scrum Team supporting multiple Commercial off the Shelf Software (COTS) and custom .Net projects in an Agile environment. Working on a team, the successful candidate will perform the full spectrum of database administration, including but not limited to the following:

This position will be filled at either the Solutions Architect 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Solutions Architect 3 ($112,000 - $186,700)

  • SQL Database Administration for the unclassified and classified networks.

  • Design, develop, modify, test, debug and evaluate SQL databases, tables, queries and permissions to meet functional requirements for functional areas.

  • Database structuring and scripting.

  • Work with System Administrators and the Software Developers to design servers and databases to desired and compliant specifications.

  • Develop and maintain database server architecture and reporting processes.

  • Mentor and support fellow junior team members.

  • Maintain SQL Servers to compliance, patching and insuring compatibility with current COTS and custom .Net projects.

  • Configure and maintain Always on Availability Groups and disaster recovery solutions.

Solutions Architect 4 ($135,300 - $227,700)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:

  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on SQL and Database design and implementation.

  • Analyze and define business requirements and prepare and present technical designs.

  • Advance experience creating and executing SQL Stored Procedures, database schemas, triggers and creating views.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Solutions Architect 3

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in database installations, configurations, and upgrades.

  • Strong knowledge of SQL, SQL Server tools, database architecture, normalization, and indexing.

  • In-depth understanding and demonstrated experience in database security, backup and recovery, implementing disaster recovery plans, performance monitoring requirements, performance tuning, and optimizing queries for maximum efficiency and operations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Windows Server 2019 and 2022 operating systems, system architectures, network infrastructures, client-server principles, Active Directory and Powershell.

  • Experienced in the implementation and maintenance of database security policies and procedures and applying security best practices.

  • Demonstrated experienced in database accuracy, testing, data validation, data comparison and data auditing tools.

  • Experienced troubleshooting complex technical database problems, examining probable root cause of an issue until a problem's ultimate cause or solution is found.

  • Ability to translate technical terms to layperson's terms and present them to non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to lead translation of business requirements to technical solutions.

  • Excellent collaboration and communications skills with internal and external organizations, defining expectations, mutual responsibilities, and recognizing when software modifications are appropriate as a solution to existing problems.

Additional Job Requirements for Solutions Architect 4:

  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing business and integration solutions from the ground up leveraging templates and established design principles.

  • Experience with Azure DevOPs Pipelines and CI/CD development, and deployment of software in diverse application environments.

  • Expertise in communicating technical business requirements and design concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Advanced knowledge of Secure coding and DBA practices.

  • Identify and lead process enhancements for optimization.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience administrating PostgreSQL or Oracle Database Management Systems.

  • Experience working in a Jira or Azure DevOps environment.

  • Experience working in a Scrum Team environment.

  • Experience in .NET or Java

Education:

Solutions Architect 3

Position requires a minimum of 10-15 years of related experience. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.

Solutions Architect 4

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 15 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, postgraduate coursework may be expected.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
