Provide basic research services for ASC by staffing the Information/Reception desk and Reading Room. Provide other central service functions as outlined below. Key Responsibilities/Duties and Percentage of time: As curator of the Upper Midwest Literary Archive (UMLA) (50%): Provide research assistance to a world-wide clientele. Collaborate with UMN faculty and faculty from other institutions to provide classroom instruction using UMLA collections. In collaboration with the Director, strategically enhance the collection through purchases and developing/maintaining relationships with donors. Work with staff in Cataloging, Metadata, and Digitization Services and in ASC Central Processing to prioritize book cataloging, digitization, and archival processing. Participate in department-wide efforts around process improvement and outreach. Create exhibits and provide presentations to community groups. As part of Central Services (50%): Provide basic research services for ASC (30%): Staff the reception desk and work in the reading room when needed, monitor Question Point and refer queries to appropriate staff members. Provide orientation and reference assistance to researchers, including using ASC finding aids and library catalogs to determine which ASC unit(s) fits researchers' needs. Explain policies and procedures. Refer queries to appropriate ASC units.Provide basic reference for walk-in researchers. Provide basic reference for walk-in researchers. Coordinate scanning of archival materials for researchers, providing copy/scan services, including logging, invoicing, and pick up. Department-wide student administrative duties and data entry, in collaboration with the LAIII. Schedule ASC student staff for Reading Room and reception desk shifts using "When to Work" software and assists student employees with updates, approvals, scheduling, and substitutions. Maintain a site for student staff where all necessary information is available for access to department and building information, scheduling, training tools. Update procedures manual and information/welcome packet for students. Train staff and students in reading room and reception desk policies and procedures, ensuring uniform application of policies and procedures. Maintain on-line registration forms for researchers and provide reports regarding researchers when needed. Other central service functions (20%): Paging and reshelving of archival materials and rare books for researchers and Units. Support 15 archival units in retrieving and reshelving materials for researchers including using the stock picker to retrieve materials from high-bay. Understand collection organization of archival materials. Shelve rare book materials in Dewey, LC and other collection sequences. Assist with collection moves and planning. Process archival materials and collections. Work under the Central Processing Coordinator to arrange and describe archival materials using national and local standards such as DACS and EAD. Qualifications Required: Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience; or a combination of related education and work experience to equal six years. Position involves comparing, verifying and reconciling data to help department achieve overall objectives. Preferred: Experience providing research assistance to users of archival and book collections. Experience arranging and describing archival collections. Exp rience supervising student employees. About the Department Service Unit Overview: The Archives and Special Collections Department (ASC) consists of 16 collecting areas comprising rare books, archival and special collections, as well as Central Processing and Research Services. The department's primary tasks are to acquire, organize and describe, physically manage, and provide access to archival materials, rare books, and other special collections held at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, as well as teach and provide community outreach. The Upper Midwest Literary Archives comprises the papers of individuals such as Robert Bly, Bill Holm, James Wright, and Trish Hampl, as well as the records of small press publishers such as Milkweed Editions and Graywolf Press, and related published materials. The curator is responsible for research services, collection development and management, collaborating with faculty in using the collection for teaching and providing instruction, and community outreach, which can include exhibits and presentations.
