Job Summary:

JOB SUMMARY

This is a pharmacy technician position on the centralized population health team. This team supports a team pharmacists, patients, clinicians, and care management team to ensure effective, safe, and cost-effective drug therapy. Further, this technician will support the prescriber and pharmacist to implement the patient’s care plan, such as navigating insurance benefits and pharmacy challenges. More specifically this person will manage prior authorizations for primary care patients from initial request through final decision.

The position requires familiarity with retail pharmacy billing, solving commonly encountered problems when filling medications, and various PA software (e.g. Cover My Meds). Given the rapidly growing nature of this team, staff must be quick learners, flexible, and team players. The technician will interact closely with PA team members as well as with other technicians, pharmacists, clinic nurses, providers, outside pharmacy staff, and payers. Therefore, one must be comfortable explaining potentially complex scenarios over the phone or via written communication.

This is a full-time, weekday, day-shift position. It is a primarily remote and virtual position, though periodic in-person attendance may be necessary. Residence in the middle Tennessee region is preferred.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluate prior authorization requests for key barrier

  • Determine best route for medication access including prior authorization or alternative path

  • Review patient records for applicable information to answer prior authorizations

  • Complete and manage prior authorization submissions

  • Communicate questions, updates, and decisions to clinic staff, pharmacies, and patients as needed

  • Maintain data in appropriate database to facilitate evaluation and presentation of program outcomes

  • Appropriately document in the medical record

  • Brainstorm opportunities for quality and process improvement

  • Works collaboratively to balance workload and refine procedures

  • Identify and initiate cost saving opportunities for patients (e.g. copay cards, patient assistance programs)

  • Appropriately utilize pharmacist resources and appropriately respond to pharmacist oversight and requests

  • Train others on team operations and best practices for processing prior authorizations

  • Additional responsibilities as determined by the department and fluctuations in volumes
