New York Times Editing Residency in New York, New York

The mission (https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/) of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Join The New York Times Editing Residency program. The Times is seeking ambitious journalists who want to build editing careers. This two-year residency will offer a chance for participants to develop and deepen news editing skills, as well as to work on Times journalism.

We are looking for candidates who are curious, collaborative and committed to excellence. Applicants should have at least two years of professional journalism experience. Prior editing experience, while not necessary, is strongly recommended. Journalists with more than seven years of editing experience will not be considered.

Residents should expect to work on breaking news desks. Participants will also edit other types of journalism, including enterprise stories and special projects. The most competitive candidates will have: excellent news judgment; a sharp eye for detail; be inquisitive about a broad array of topics; be able to frame articles and write sparkling display copy; and have a track record of developing strong and trusting relationships with reporters and fellow editors. The ability to handle multiple articles and pivot on deadline is essential.

The editors will participate in speaker programs and training and receive regular feedback.

Responsibilities:

  • Copy edit articles from desks across the newsroom

  • Edit breaking news and feature articles

  • Participate in training and social programs

  • Believe in The New York Times’ commitment to independent journalism, as well as its mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

  • Uphold the editorial standards of The Times

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years of professional journalism experience

  • Ability to work some nights, weekends and holidays

  • This is a hybrid position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience assigning and editing news articles

Please note that there is no guarantee of a full-time position at the completion of the program. We will offer support to editors in their search for full-time opportunities.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. The Times is unable to sponsor new work visas for the residency.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, May 30. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered, and The Times will not accept applications that are mailed or emailed. Nor will The Times acknowledge the status of your application upon receipt given the volume the program receives. In your cover letter, please describe why you want to be an editor. The Times will contact you for interviews as needed, and finalists must take an editing test as part of the interview process. The residency will begin in November.
