The Facilities Services Garage at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a temporary, full-time Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) position, Grade 12.

Posting Date: April 15, 2024

Review Date: Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Salary: $23.45/hr. In accordance with the CSEA Operational Services Unit Agreement.

Date of Appointment: As soon as possible

Description of Responsibilities:

Operational Needs:

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) related to the job duties.

  • Must have a New York State inspection license to perform New York State Inspections on light duty and heavy-duty vehicles.

  • Must possess a valid New York State driver's license.

  • Must have experience with auto body and welding with fabrication.

  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical systems, both large and small, from front end loaders to fabrication of welding rusted out body panels.

  • Ability to diagnose computer control systems.

  • Ability to diagnose and repair hydraulic systems including plows, garbage trucks, packers, Kubotas, and street sweepers.

  • Ability to follow department and safety procedures while cutting, grinding, welding, etc.

  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.

  • Have a record of dependability and satisfactory work performance.

  • Knowledge of the use of hand tools and shop equipment.

  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolds.

  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, and stretch for long periods at a time.

  • Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor.

  • Ability to train and supervise skilled, semiskilled, and relatively unskilled workers.

  • Must have strong computer skills and the ability to use TMA.

  • Must be able to interpret and understand computer logic.

  • Must be able to prove a strong electrical troubleshooting ability.

Job Duties:

  • Diagnoses and performs major and minor mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs on self-propelled and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment.

  • Installs body and fender work on self-propelled and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment.

  • Maintains gasoline, alternative fuel, and diesel engines; performs preventive maintenance and safety inspections of vehicles and equipment. When licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicles, may perform NYS Motor Vehicle Inspections.

  • Maintains diesel-powered equipment and components such as hydraulic systems, transmissions and differentials, hydraulic and air brakes, automotive electronics, fuel injection systems, turbochargers, and starting systems.

  • Operates test equipment, and hand and power tools, including equipment that assists in the diagnosis and repair of electronic engine control systems.

  • Welds, cuts, and brazes a variety of materials using electric or oxy-acetylene welding equipment.

  • May supervise, train, and instruct subordinates.

  • Orders, receives, and inventories supplies and parts for vehicle maintenance and repairs.

  • Operates a variety of self-propelled motor vehicles and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment to test proper operation.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.

  • Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.

  • Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.

  • Graduation from a one-year post-high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
