Our Opportunity:

The Corporate Information Technology group in Charles Schwab & Co.'s IT organization is comprised of several teams that support the goals of Schwab’s internal corporate functions through the delivery of technology, operations, and projects. The goal of the Employee Digital ExperienceDigital Workplace Technology team team is to partner closely with enterprise business partners to define and enable a consumer like internal employee technology experience within Schwab to enhance our employees’ productivity and effectiveness. Our focus is to deliver solutions that align with Digital Workplace and various lines of business strategies through an agile and customer-aligned approach.

Reporting to the Vice President of Digital Workplace Technology, the Technical Director of IoT (Internet of Things) and Branches of the Future will lead and focus on the creation of strategies and roadmaps that will deliver emerging technical capabilities to support the Branches of the Future and Digital Workplace initiatives across Schwab. Identifying and vetting emerging hardware and software technologies and recommending the practical application of these technologies into our next generation of products and solutions. Operate as key technical SME within the Digital Workplace Technology (DWT) organization and to other teams.

You will be part of the Digital Workplace team at Schwab, focused on improving the Branches of the Future journey and experience for our clients and introducing personas to provide personalized context aware employee user experiences driven by the power of data in support of the Digital Workplace strategy. The Technical Director Solutions Architect will focus on driving client-centricity, reducing time to market & increasing efficiency. In addition, this TD will focus on opportunities to further refine our Digital Workplace Blueprint and Roadmap, along with DWT TD peers, adding new innovative technologies and solutions over time. The model is insights-driven and focuses on rapid iterations to drive innovation and transformation. What you’ll do:

The Technical Director works as a team member alongside the Product Leads, Technical Leads and other supporting team members to deliver solutions. This is an opportunity to be a part of a cutting edge team respected for the products they produce and building products that clients love. The scope of activities are:ir role within SDLC:

  • Understand business drivers and business capabilities (future and current state), and determine corresponding enterprise system designs and change requirements to drive the organization's targeted business outcomes.

  • Design and lead the implementation of a solutions architecture across a group of specific business applications or technologies based on enterprise business strategy, business capabilities, business requirements and non-functional requirements.

  • Manage and develop the architecture for a broader scope of projects, working closely with application architects that manage and design architecture for a single project or initiative.

  • Provide consulting support to application architects within projects to ensure the project is aligned with the overall enterprise architecture and meets all business requirements and non-functional requirements.

  • Monitor the current-state solution portfolio to identify deficiencies through aging of the technologies used by the application, or misalignment with business requirements.

  • Understand technology trends and the practical application of existing, new, and emerging technologies to enable new and evolving business and operating models.

  • Understand, advocate and augment the principles of information technology strategies.

  • Analyze the business-IT environment (run, grow and transform the business) to detect critical deficiencies, and recommend solutions for improvement (systems of record, differentiation and innovation).

  • Analyze the technology industry, competitors and market trends, and determine their potential impact on the enterprise.

  • Define the principles, guidelines, standards and solution patterns to ensure solution decisions are aligned with the enterprise's future-state architecture vision.

  • Design and direct the governance activities associated with ensuring solutions architecture assurance and compliance.

  • Develop a roadmap for the evolution of the enterprise application portfolio from future to current state (as defined by the solutions architecture).

  • Facilitate the evaluation and selection of software product standards and services, as well as the design of standard and custom software configurations.

  • Consult with application and infrastructure development projects to fit systems or infrastructure to architecture, and identify when it is necessary to modify projects to accommodate the solutions architecture.

  • Identify the organizational impact (for example, on skills, processes, structures or culture) and financial impact of the solutions architecture.

  • Document all solution architecture design and analysis work.

  • Work closely with the program management office (PMO) or project management office to ensure the execution of plans corresponds with what is being promised.

  • Advocate for agile practices to increase delivery agility.

  • Embrace emergent architecture to accommodate evolution.

  • Mentor the technical community on the practice of architecture, application modernization and technology strategy

  • Assist with the talent acquisition process by performing candidate screening for key technical roles

  • Solution Ideation

  • Assist business in the scoping and planning of upcoming projects

  • Solution Architecture and Design

  • Participate/Lead in producing the solutions conceptual architecture and associated artifacts

  • Develop logical architecture of solution components based on conceptual architecture/design

  • Advice/Mentor on Technical and Functional Design

  • Provide advice and guidance to team leads regarding technical and functional design decisions

  • Curator of Guiding Principles in alignment with EA Principles

  • Curator of standards and best practices

  • Consultative on larger strategy

  • Owns the end to end solution design and architecture for overall portfolio and domain

  • Collaborates with EA and SAs from other domain to design/deliver larger scoped initiatives

Additionally you will,

  • Lead architecture vision of the IoT, Persona driven context aware and Branches of the Future services solutions to ensure consistency with overall enterprise architecture and Digital Workplace strategies

  • Partner with other TD peers across Technology to identify further opportunities for the DWT blueprint and roadmap

  • Provide additional support on mobile technologies and standards to compliment our existing team in place and avoid single knowledge points within the portfolio

  • Develop the roadmap for DWT analytics including socializing opportunities, gaining buy-in and partnering with the team to deliver

  • Foster an in-depth understanding of the ways that Schwab serves our clients, and the key ways in which Schwab can improve the delivery and quality of those services, products, and tools

  • Design the overall technological architecture of IoT and persona driven context aware solutions that will support the Branches of the Future and Digital Workplace Solutions.

  • Guide project teams on technology strategy; works closely with the rest of the team to create a modular and scalable solution that addresses future architectural changes and designs

  • Drives the teams in engineering practices in test driven development, continuous integration, and automated deployment

  • Mentors and coaches the technical team, specifically with code reviews

  • Be hands-on and engage in coding to help the team to develop the solution and solve all surfacing problems at hand

  • Identifies and removes technical impediments

  • Works with Product Owner to align the roadmap with strengths and opportunities within the technical stack

  • Provides the team a roadmap for implementing software engineering practices for higher code quality

  • Partner with Product Owner as an Architect Owner (responsible for the architecture) for building reusable and scalable components

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, system analysis, engineering or a related study, or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience as an architect in building complex, highly scalable and low latency applications

  • 10+ years of solid development experience on distributed platforms

  • Strong track record in forecasting emerging technology trends and creating actionable plans to intersect them with solution offerings

  • Ability to work on cross channel integrations

  • Experience with relational databases, HTTP and domain driven design

  • Experience with microservice architectures

  • Knowledge of the enterprise technology space: languages, frameworks, techniques, industry trends (hybrid and native)

  • Lead experience in application development (Java or .Net)

  • Deep knowledge of MongoDB database design, data design and comparison to relational databases

  • Deep knowledge of cross platform mobile development tools/technologies

  • Knowledge of HTML5, CSS and JavaScript (Angular, Backbone, React) and progressive design

  • Deep knowledge of API (REST, SOAP), API Management and building scalable and high performance Web APIs.

  • Securing APIs and experience developing services that are identified by both consuming application and end-users and securing services across both constructs with OAuth, SAML, Two-Factor or Custom Authentication Schemes (mobile security)

  • Deep knowledge of one or more languages: C#, or Java.

  • Deep knowledge and experience with server side .NET or Java.

  • Deep knowledge and experience with client side JavaScript (Angular, Node)

  • Familiar with Cloud IoT services like Google Cloud IoT, Azure IoT Hub etc.

  • Knowledge of IoT Security best practices

  • Ability to define strategy that converges physical and digital experiences

  • Ability (and preference) to work in an Agile environment.

  • Ability to apply innovative technology to solutions that would benefit our clients.
