GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Director of Advancement will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts in support of the mission of the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). The Director will report to the Executive Director of Advancement, URMC Clinical, Research and Hospital Programs with responsibility for helping to build a robust major gift program for key clinical programs including, but not limited to the Flaum Eye Institute/Department of Ophthalmology, Department of Urology, Department of Imaging Sciences and the Highlands at Brighton. The primary prospect pool for this position will consist of patients and families who have received care at URMC, community members, key volunteers, Resident and Fellow alumni, faculty and staff. The Director will work both independently and in concert with University of Rochester Advancement colleagues, Medical Center leadership, faculty and staff and URMC volunteers in order to support the key philanthropic priorities of the Medical Center. The incumbent will have an opportunity to build their portfolio to an ideal size of 100 major gift prospects. Progress toward specific activity goals, including visits and gift solicitations, will be evaluated in an ongoing manner.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Develop a prospect portfolio of 100 major gift prospects, with an expectation of 150 personal visits annually. Detailed expectations for donor and potential donor interactions are highlighted below along with percentage of time spent in each area. The goal is to secure philanthropic support to the University of Rochester Medical Center.

  • Implement prospect identification & qualification strategies. Develop and execute individualized cultivation plans, this will also include local travel and occasional travel outside of the Rochester region to engage grateful patients, volunteers, and alumni.

  • Solicit potential benefactors for major gifts ($100,000 or more) & leadership annual gifts ($10,000 or more).

  • Serve as the Advancement primary liaison working with various Chairs/Chiefs/Directors in the assigned programs in consultation with the Executive Director. This would include monthly meetings with these faculty/staff leaders along with engagement concerning donor activities.

  • Actively collaborate with University of Rochester and URMC Advancement colleagues, URMC Faculty and staff leaders to identify engagement opportunities and appropriate philanthropic strategies for potential donors.

  • This also includes generating and delivering customized stewardship plans and impact reports to URMC donors, alumni and volunteers.

  • Work with the past and present Philanthropy Champions who represent the assigned program areas. This includes meeting with the philanthropy champions to build an on-going relationship with the URMC Advancement team and discussing patient referrals/outreach for future engagement, cultivation and solicitation opportunities.

  • Work with volunteer boards who are associated with assigned clinical areas

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • A minimum of 7-10years fundraising experience, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience required.

  • Experience working in an academic setting preferred.

  • Demonstrated success in closing major gifts from individual donors preferred;

  • Track record of managing a major gift portfolio size of 100 preferred;

  • Plan, implement and analyze a prospect qualification strategy preferred;

  • Collaborate with a wide variety of constituents, including patients and families, University and URMC faculty and staff leaders, key volunteers, potential donors and advancement colleagues required;

  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to the mission of the University of Rochester Medical Center required

  • Model the values of the University of Rochester and its Medical Center, including a commitment to integrity, an inclusive and team-based approach to our work, and an emphasis on service excellence required;

  • A positive attitude and strong sense of personal responsibility and work ethic; Commitment to the University of Rochester & UR Advancement values on an ongoing basis required

  • Ability to work effectively with a large team and in a complex professional environment required;

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form, with an emphasis on critical listening skills;

  • Demonstrated empathy and discretion when working with sensitive situations, including interactions where patient experiences are shared required;

  • Willingness to travel throughout the Rochester region and at times outside of the Rochester region. Participate in some evening and weekend work-related events and activities, when needed required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in or ability to learn Windows-based fundraising and other work-related software applications required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $84,718 - $127,088 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
