General Purpose:
The Student Success Librarian is responsible for helping to advance the River Campus Libraries’ (RCL) research and learning strategies to key groups ( particularly first-generation students, students from historically marginalized communities, international students, transfer students, graduate students, and students in the primary writing requirement program ) by developing intentional projects and initiatives that ensure equitable access to quality information, programs, and services. The incumbent will research, lead, and implement programs and services that emphasize idea exploration and skill development, facilitating a student’s pursuit and creation of knowledge. Through such work, and in coordination with the Director of Learning Initiatives, the librarian will utilize user needs assessment methods to cultivate welcoming, meaningful, and inclusive connections with students and student groups whereby showcasing the value of the library to the student experience. With all student groups, the incumbent will work to enhance their current needs and aspirations while enabling a spirit of and the skills/tools for lifelong learning, seeing today’s students as tomorrow’s alumni.
To achieve these responsibilities, the incumbent will collaborate closely with library colleagues ( e.g., Library professionals from Learning and Research Initiatives, Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation; Robbins Medieval Library; User Engagement; OER Working Group; Scholarly Communications Team; iZone; Patron Services ) to identify and address emerging concerns within disciplinary work and with campus partners ( e.g., Office of Minority Student Affairs [OMSA], International Services Office [ISO], Office of Disability Resources, Career Center, Student Association [SA], the Office of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs [GEPA] ) to understand, anticipate, and fulfill student research and learning needs, develop collaborative and holistic programs and supports, and augment connections that leverage the library’s unique expertise, collections, and services.
Responsibilites:
Conduct user needs assessment to surface students’ core needs
With library and campus partners, explore user experience and other research methods to identify the best approaches to solicit current and ongoing student needs, focusing on audiences not traditionally considered or included.
Establish and execute a plan for regularly engaging with students, student groups, and library/campus partners, utilizing a variety of user experience research methods.
From the data collected, analyze, identify and discuss (with collaborators) opportunities that grow and enrich learning as supported by the library’s unique expertise, collections, and services.
Remain current on trends and issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in K-12 and higher education
Plan and develop student success initiatives
Collaborate with library colleagues, campus student support units, and student groups to identify and develop sustainable and high-impact initiatives that engage and support students
Support experiential learning (e.g., peer-to-peer, hands-on, reflective) and innovative approaches to idea exploration and skill development by empowering students to develop and lead initiatives.
Create multimodal information resources and asynchronous learning activities that contribute relevant content for RCL online resources and support a consistent service and learning experience.
Develop assessment plans to learn about success of programs and ways to enhance them.
Lead student success initiatives
Lead and/or coordinate workshops, programs, and events that support student success by connecting students with library expertise, collections, services, programs, and spaces (to include several identified programs like High School-to-College; Early Connections Opportunities; First-Year Orientation; Textbook Affordability via OER; Learning Center, GEPA, and Writing Center initiatives).
Coordinate and support student-led workshops, programs, and events.
Assess initiatives to support continuous improvement.
Provide instruction for information literacy, with a focused integration of data and digital fluencies
Work primarily with assigned writing and College of Arts and Sciences (CASC) instructors to deliver high-impact library instruction.
Engage in collaborative conversations with library colleagues and writing program staff to optimize and make sustainable the library’s connection to the first-year writing program.
Participate in the assessment of library contributions to the writing program.
Cultivate relationships
Establish connections with assigned partners, departments, units, and student groups that enhance their understanding of how libraries can meaningfully connect with their core work, mission, and values.
Develop communication and marketing tactics tailored to primary audiences that promote library initiatives, services, programs, and events.
Communicate mutually beneficial ideas that are rooted in equity, inclusivity, and access and support a welcoming environment that supports the library community’s academic needs.
Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
- Possibility of evening/weekend work
Engage in professional development for functional, library, and personal enhancement
Qualifications:
Post-graduate degree in library and information science from an A.L.A.-accredited institution (or related post-graduate degree with experience working in an academic library) required
Degree, coursework, or experience in one or more fields related to this position (e.g., student life, mental health and well-being, DEI, counseling, education, human development) preferred
Experience developing and cultivating relationships and partnerships required
Experience collaborating across disciplines/fields required
Facilitation, training, or teaching experience required
At least two years of professional experience in the areas of study/relevance listed above preferred
Experience delivering high-impact initiatives and programs preferred
Mentoring experience preferred
Job-related experience in an academic or research library preferred
Competencies in information, digital, and/or data literacies required
Ability to look beyond one's assigned area of focus to find connections and opportunities required
Ability to create an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment required
Demonstrated commitment to teamwork/collaboration and ability to work effectively with a diverse campus community required
Ability to remain current in best practices related to student success in higher education required
Research practices and data skills related to assigned areas required
Working knowledge of digital tools and methods that enhance the researcher/learner experience required
Familiarity with instructional design principles required
Familiarity with ACRL’s information literacy framework required
Familiarity with critical, anti-racist, and/or feminist pedagogies required
Familiarity with project management tools, methods and/or workflows required
Outstanding customer service required

Pay Range
Pay Range: $ 54,808 - $ 76,752 Annually
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
