Together, we work towards equipping each student with the tools they need to become lifelong learners and valuable contributors to both their local community and the global society.FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF UNIT: The counselor will counsel and support students and advance the program design for students. The school seeks to graduate students prepared to become good citizens, future leaders and meaningful contributors to society. Students will grow and learn in a safe and positive environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSProvide Counseling Services

§ Counsel students.

§ Deliver instruction at each grade level in career planning to assigned students.

§ Assist students in implementing personal goals with the planning of an appropriate high school program and an annual review of the high school educational plan.

§ Help students understand their academic record, including test results, marks, and educational plan.

§ Provide programs and information which will make transitions for students as smooth as possible.

§ Monitor the progress of at-risk students.

§ Provide crisis intervention for such issues as, but not limited to: grief and loss, child abuse, substance abuse, harassment, pregnancy, and behavior management.Provide Coordinating Services

§ Have a strong knowledge base of school and community resources, services and programs and access these for their students.

§ Facilitate students’ educational, social and emotional development.

§ Assist pupils to make plans beyond high school.

§ Develop techniques for disseminating educational and career information and relate it to school curricula.

§ Keep data on individual students.

§ Collaborate with other counselors to increase individual effectiveness in meeting student needs.

Provide Consulting Services

§ Encourage and support active parental involvement in planning student programs.

§ Communicate on a regular basis with students, parents, community, staff and administration.

§ Consult with parents, teachers, and other specialists.

§ Are active members of the student support team and interact on an on-going basis with student support staff and transition team for students with disabilities.

§ Recommend to the administration changes in the curriculum, methods, rules, and policies when such changes are indicated as the result of counseling.

§ Engage in Professional Development

§ Keep up-to-date on sources of career information.

§ Pursue continuous professional growth through in-service workshops, conferences and professional meetings.

§ Adhere to the ethics of the counseling profession.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATION:

· New York State Certification
