Under supervision, performs routine industrial hygiene work in connection with hazardous materials and other health hazards; conducts and participates in industrial hygiene surveys and inspections of Airport facilities; conducts routine industrial hygiene monitoring of chemical, biological, and physical agents; maintains, calibrates and inventories standard industrial hygiene equipment; assists in developing and conducting occupational health and safety training programs; assists in developing technical materials; and performs related duties as required.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducts and participates in industrial hygiene surveys and inspections of Airport facilities for the purpose of identifying, evaluating, recommending controls, and regulating the use of hazardous chemical, biological, and physical agents;

  • Investigates and evaluates health and safety hazards and advises industrial hygienists and health and safety personnel of findings for necessary remedial action; conducts routine industrial hygiene monitoring of chemical, biological and physical agents.

  • Conducts routine industrial hygiene work in connection with hazardous materials, including the removal of asbestos, lead and mold; obtains and maintains any certifications or minimum qualifications required by state or federal law.

  • Assists in developing technical materials and provides technical assistance in establishing legally mandated elements of Occupational Safety and Health Programs; assists in evaluating employee reports of unhealthy working conditions;

  • Assists in developing and conducting training on occupational health and safety topics.

  • Provides technical support in identifying, preventing, and recommending controls of health and safety hazards, and in coordinating implementation of applicable laws, policies, procedures and regulations.

  • Assists in administrative tasks related to enforcement of codes and other regulations; maintains technical reference materials and records; compiles data and assists in preparation of reports.

  • Conducts respiratory protection fit testing.

  • Conducts ergonomic evaluations.

  • Maintains, calibrates and inventories standard industrial hygiene equipment.

  • Wears all forms of respiratory protection; passes medical exams for work with asbestos and lead; works around hazardous materials;

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:  Possession of a Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health/Management, or an equivalent degree in a closely related field from an accredited college or university.  All degrees must have major coursework in Industrial Hygiene.

License and Certification:  Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

Substitution:  Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, Health, or Management; Occupational Safety & Health; or in a closely related major (examples include but are not limited to toxicology; chemistry, physics; biology; or mechanical, chemical, or environmental engineering). Applicant’s college coursework must include a minimum of 6 semesters of any combination of chemistry, biology, and/or physics.

AND

Six months of exposure to industrial hygiene practice by way of an internship, trainee position, or technician under the direction of an industrial hygienist.

May substitute for the required Education and Experience.

Working Conditions:

This position will require employee to work with hazardous materials and will include physical work such as lifting, entering crawl spaces and climbing into attics; working in adverse weather and working conditions; working in confined spaces; working in noisy environments; and wearing safety equipment such as respirators.  Incumbent may be required to work day, swing, and night shifts, holidays, and weekends.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Proficiency with computer software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and ability to use learning management systems.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with Airport environment and regulations

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:

Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening.  Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination.  Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Customs Clearance:

This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area.  An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced.  Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal.  Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination.  Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 19, Part 122, Sections 181 or 189.

Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential functions of the job and/or the ability to meet the physical minimum requirements.
