The Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) combines the social sciences, humanities, and professional fields to enhance our understanding of our increasingly interconnected globe. JSIS currently offers seven undergraduate majors, 14 minors, and nine interdisciplinary MA degrees, as well as a fee-based MA in applied international studies, and a uniquely-designed Ph.D. Program. In addition, graduate students have the opportunity to pursue concurrent degrees with programs in business administration, public affairs, law, public health, marine affairs, and forest resources. JSIS is a department in the Social Sciences Division of the UW College of Arts and Sciences.

Established in 1974 by faculty in the Jackson School, the Journal of Japanese Studies is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary forum for communicating research on Japan. Its core objective is to maintain an enduring record of highest-quality and evidence-based scholarship through publication of empirical and interpretive work on Japan and an extensive and substantive book review section. The Journal is committed to inclusion and the opportunity for scholars to engage with others without malice or harassment. The Journal is published twice each year, winter and summer, and is published by the Society for Japanese Studies and housed at the University of Washington.

The Journal seeks a managing editor (Editor-Research Publications 1) to coordinate all aspects of managing submissions and book reviews, editing accepted manuscripts for publication, communicating with authors, submitting content for each issue to external press, and collaborating with two coeditors in managing all related aspects of Journal business. The coeditors and Editorial Board evaluate material for publication and provide overall direction for Journal activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist coeditors and Editorial Board in considering, accepting, editing, and preparing written research materials for publication by external press and conducting related business of Journal operations.

Editorial 60%

  • Article submissions: receive manuscripts submitted by authors from around the world; as directed by coeditors, obtain referee reports and draft decision letters based on coeditors’ decisions.

  • Book reviews: request and receive new books for review; following selection by coeditors, commission reviews and follow up until book reviews received.

  • Editing: copy edit article and book review manuscripts for readability, coherence, accuracy, grammar, and conformity to standards of JJS style; return edited manuscripts to authors with substantive and stylistic queries from coeditors and managing editor; with concurrence of author, rephrase or revise materials to improve organization and clarity; incorporate author changes; prepare press-ready files.

  • Publication process: suggest order of articles and book reviews; recommend running heads for articles; write original no substantive content of each issue (Table of Contents, Notes on Contributors, Publications of Note); proofread galley proofs; accept and schedule advertising, invoice advertisers.Correspondence 20%

  • Draft and send 99% of JJS correspondence, including that approved by coeditors to go out over their signature; respond to all email received by JJS.Marketing and record keeping 20%

  • Maintain website and social media sites; submit local tax returns in consultation with treasurer; compile reports for CPA to prepare annual federal income tax return (501c3); plan annual budget and balance sheet in consultation with coeditors and finance committee; reconcile monthly account statements; prepare agenda and minutes from corporate annual business meeting.

  • Perform related duties as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in English, journalism, humanities, or related field; OR four years of combined college education and editing experience; OR four years of full-time publication and/or editing experience. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Outstanding organizational skills, attention to details, and ability to establish priorities.
