The School of Pharmacy Mass Spectrometry Center (SOPMS) is located in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and is a Core cost facility for hands-on use as well as submitted samples and method development. The Center operates and maintains a variety of mass spectrometers as a self-sustaining research resource by means of a University regulated recharge system. The SOPMS facilitates research objectives from not only UW but also from non-profit and commercial entities around the world. We specialize in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for identification and quantification purposes.

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 (E S UAW RSE). The individual in this position will be responsible for analyzing submitted samples, focusing on proteomic analysis, using various instrumentation available, as well as maintain and troubleshoot each piece of instrumentation associated with the SOPMS.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Analysis of submitted samples for low resolution and accurate mass determination.

• Develop and implement protocols for peptide mapping, top-down and bottom-up proteomics experiments

• Develop and teach analytical methodology for analytes of interest.

• Point of contact for design and implantation of studies using high end instrumentation.

• Troubleshoot and repair HPLC/UPLC delivery units.

• Intimately know all instruments and software used within the Center.

• Teach users how to operate, troubleshoot, and obtain data from any given instrument within the Center.

• Perform routine analysis of data and assist with trouble shooting and daily quality control of data.

• Basic laboratory skills, including the ability to keep detailed records of procedures performed.

• Provide status reports to the Principal Investigator and Technical Director of the Center.

• Basic lab maintenance, including ordering and helping with chemical safety paperwork.

• Very strong organizational abilities and experience in team focused work environment.

• Attention to procedural detail and meticulous record-keeping is required.

• Assist in planning and assigning work to Laboratory Helpers and students; assist in training Laboratory Helpers and students on laboratory maintenance and methods.

• Perform related duties as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry or related Life Sciences and four years of experience with high pressure liquid chromatography and mass spectrometers, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

• Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Masters in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry or related Life Sciences or equivalent education and at least two years related work experience.

• Requires excellent written and verbal skills, strong chemistry background, electronics and IT understanding, troubleshooting abilities, and personal interaction skills.

• Candidate must also know how to prepare, process and analyze proteomic samples.

• Knowledge of major mass spectrometry vendors software, such as MassLynx, Chemstation, MassHunter, and Empower.

• Familiar with sample preparation and extraction techniques.

• Repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of a variety of different mass spectrometry platforms.
