City of Traverse City (Mechanic) Vehicle Equipment Technician in Traverse City, Michigan

Receives general supervision from the Superintendent, Garage Division and day-to-day activities from the Chief Vehicular Equipment Technician. A Vehicle Equipment Technician is thoroughly trained and experienced in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of all City vehicles and equipment.

This employee functions as an experienced mechanic/technician, at the journey level, performing a wide range of maintenance, diagnostic, and mechanical repair. This is a full-time union position with a competitive benefits package.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, with additional applicable related course work or experience as necessary to maintain ability and skills.
  • Employees must provide their own set of basic hand tools to perform Vehicle Equipment Technician work.
  • Must be able to operate hand, power, pneumatic air tools, and shop service equipment.
  • Must be able to safely operate a variety of shop equipment necessary to be learned and applied including, but not limited to, brake lathe, drill press, tire mounting and balancing equipment, vehicle hoists, band saw and welding equipment.
  • Must be able to safely operate a variety of vehicles and equipment necessary to be learned and applied including, but not limited to, backhoes, wheel loaders, tractors, plow-dump trucks, police vehicles, fire trucks, snow groomers, pumps and air compressors.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with the public, employees and City administrators.
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate sound ethics, good judgment and confidentiality of information.

This is a full time union position. The starting pay is $23.38 per hour.

Effective July 1, 2024: Starting pay is $27.63 an hr

Effective 7/1/2025: $29.01 - $32.42 an hr depending on step

Effective 7/1/2026: $30.17 - $33.72 an hr depending on step
