Virgin Galactic Specialist Engineer - Reliability, Maintainability and Serviceability in Tustin, California

Virgin Galactic is seeking a talented and motivated Reliability, Maintainability, & Serviceability (RM&S) Specialist Engineer to join our team. The RM&S Specialist will help the manager guide a team of Engineers to ensure the successful execution of the engineering lifecycle for all programs as it pertains to the reliability, maintainability, and serviceability of Virgin Galactic aircraft and spacecraft. The Lead will report to the Manager of the RM&S team. The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience working with aerospace vehicle development programs and will have strong experience in project management and leading an engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Manager, lead the team with limited supervision.

  • Lead teamwork packages assignments per the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) and the team schedules and report progress with the vehicle programs.

  • Track schedule progress and implement risk and mitigation plans using team resources.

  • Coordinate with the team members to develop and maintain the technical standards and processes to facilitate execution of team responsibilities.

  • Assist the Manager to develop and manage team budget and staffing needs.

  • Lead and guide the team with expertise in each of the RM&S disciplines to help team members with their work products.

  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and career management of the team and onboard/train new team members.

  • Monitor each program performance/needs and ensure alignment with RM&S product deliveries. Work with the programs to solve problems and ensure efficiency of operations.

  • Manage the Tools used by the team and ensure team member’s accessibility and usage per the processes.

  • Investigate, propose, and solve complex problems; contribute to and guide team architectural decisions and best practices.

  • Support the Manager in development of the RM&S strategic planning and Lead the strategic planning for their team per the manager’s vision and develop plans for implementation.

  • May have responsibility for tasking, mentoring and leading small teams of engineers through projects / assignments

Required Skills and Experience

  • B.S. or M.S. in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) discipline from an accredited university.

  • 10 or more years of experience specific to the field of Reliability, Maintainability, & Serviceability Engineering of aircraft or spacecraft development programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and grow in the RM&S function.

  • Strong understanding of modern aerospace system architecture and operations.

  • Strong experience in developing RM&S technical documentation.

  • Strong experience in developing schedules for execution of RM&S work for multiple programs.

  • Detailed knowledge of the inputs and outputs of the various RM&S analysis techniques.

  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision to manage a functional team, adaptable to changing environments, and able to handle multiple tasks and/or projects simultaneously.

  • Must be able to Independently own a project; influence and negotiate with team‐mates.

  • Experience working with suppliers and providing specifications for custom aerospace component and system development.

  • Knowledge of RM&S industry standards and best practice analysis methods that apply to "complex systems" in an operational environment to affect predictive / preventive maintenance, availability, reliability, and safety of the vehicles.

  • Must be able to justify decisions with available information and to achieve buy in from peers.

  • Helps others be successful in daily work. Proactively communicate with others and have good presentation skills.

  • Organize and plan own work and that of other team members.

  • Can be counted on to meet commitments and execute work per schedule.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge / Experience with Design for Maintainability / Reliability / Testability / Serviceability is a plus.

  • Knowledge or willingness to learn the failure / root cause / resolution processes is a plus.

  • Knowledge of Product Safety standards ARP4761 or Mil-Std-882 is a plus.

  • Knowledge of engineering Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems is a plus.

  • Prior experience in aviation, space, complex flight systems is a plus.

  • FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) or equivalent is a plus.

  • Experience developing and conducting maintainability/reliability Testing is a plus.

  • Experience with HBM Reliasoft, Visual Basic, Visual Studio, SQL Server, MS Access, and databases is a plus.

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $132,100.00–$201,550.00. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
