UINTAH COUNTY Museum Assistant (Part-Time) in VERNAL, Utah

Museum Assistant

*(Part-Time) *

GENERAL PURPOSE Performs a variety of duties related to the support of the county museum and collections. Performs daily customer service by assisting museum patrons and operating the gift shop.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general supervision of the Library Director and Museum Curator.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED None

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides general patron assistance by acting as museum interpreter in explaining, describing, and educating patrons regarding collection pieces; plans and conducts school and patron tours.

 

Operates point-of-sale system in the gift shop to sell various museum-related products; works with vendors to purchase and replace inventory; restocks the gift shop as needed; ensures inventory is accurate.

 

Performs historical research on artifacts and materials; searches known sources such as newspapers, public records, documents, etc. working closely with the Library's Regional History Center.

 

Assists with the preparation, construction, and take-down of exhibits; monitors care of handling of objects to assure against damage; ensures objects and materials are properly displayed and stored; monitors collections for environmental conditions and pest activity.

 

Assists with accessioning objects and collection cataloging in Past Perfect, (museum record-keeping system).

 

Prepares and assists in museum programming including, but not limited to, Museum Kids, lectures, and other events; attends the Museum Board meeting and acts as the board secretary.

 

Books art shows with local and statewide art groups to be displayed in our gallery area in the museum; track visitation.

 

Coordinates with volunteers.

 

Assists in general advertising duties including but not limited to social media, the museum website, and brochures.

 

Performs general opening and closing tasks; performs general housekeeping as needed.

 

May perform or assist with any of these duties and perform related duties as required.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Education and Experience:

 

A. Graduation from high school;

    AND

B. Sufficient experience performing above or related duties;

    OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

  1. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of the methods and techniques of developing and managing museum facilities; standards and practices associated with the preservation, processing, classification, cataloging, and care of historical artifacts; general museum operations; general clerical functions, including PC operations, filing, record keeping, public relations, etc.

     

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public; organize workload in a multi-task environment; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; work under stresses associate with time deadlines and conflicting priorities; operate a personal computer and various software applications for word processing and spreadsheet information.

 

  1. Special Qualifications: None.

     

  2. Work Environment: The incumbent of the position performs in a climate-controlled environment. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain (up to 50 lbs.), related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Communicating, i.e., talking, hearing, and seeing essential to job effectiveness. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity are required. Mental application utilizes memory f or details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem-solving. Periodic travel is required in the normal course of job performance.
