The Managing Director, Schwab Compliance, is one of several key leadership roles within Schwab Compliance and serves as a key partner to specific businesses, peers in Compliance, other second line functions, Legal and Internal Audit. The Managing Director, Schwab Compliance, leads an enterprise compliance risk management organization within Schwab combining both support for specific businesses and for enterprise functions, operates through multiple regulated entities, and requires facility with multiple compliance subject matter disciplines, including broker/dealer, investment adviser, banking, and others. As with all Schwab Compliance leadership roles, the Managing Director, Schwab Compliance, requires the successful leader to model and exhibit enterprise-wide thinking and exceptional collaboration to support Schwab's business. The Managing Director, Schwab Compliance serves as part of the Schwab Compliance Leadership Team and helps shape the strategic direction of the companywide compliance risk management program.

Schwab seeks a Managing Director, Schwab Compliance, to support the firm’s Wealth and Advice Solutions business unit and to serve as the lead enterprise compliance risk management for New Products and Services. The role reports to the Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) of Charles Schwab Corporation and in all capacities supports all Schwab businesses. The Wealth & Advice Solutions business unit (WAS) was created to transform lives through accessible wealth management for every stage of the client’s journey and brings together teams from across Schwab under one enterprise to deepen client relationships and serve the wealth management needs of retail, registered investment advisers, and employer clients through Investment Solutions; Managed Investing Portfolio Solutions and Wealth Strategies and Expertise.

Key Outcomes:

  • Personal ownership of their assigned compliance risk management programs and shared accountability for the successful execution of the Schwab compliance risk management program.

  • Vivid day-to-day evidence of enterprise-wide thinking, bringing the full Schwab Compliance perspective to every aspect of the job, including exceptional collaboration and boundaryless cooperation with peers on the Schwab Compliance Leadership Team demonstrating the lived values of #OneSchwab and #OneSchwabCompliance.

  • Establish a set of leading practices for compliance for providing enterprise-wide input into Schwab’s New Products process.

  • Demonstrated success attracting, empowering and developing a diverse group of employees with the skillsets and expertise to identify, measure and manage Schwab’s compliance risk effectively.

  • Serve as a key partner to second line functions, Legal and Internal Audit as well as other Compliance colleagues.

  • Model and exhibit enterprise-wide thinking and exceptional collaboration to support Schwab’s evolving business.

  • Serve as a member of the relevant committees and governance bodies, as required.

  • Actively attract, retain, and develop a diverse team of employees with expertise in identifying, measuring, and managing compliance risk effectively.

  • Partner and collaborate with cross-functional teams as well as senior leadership across the Firm.

  • Provide leadership and oversight for New Products and Services.

Each Managing Director, Schwab Compliance, engages with Senior and Executive Leaders at all levels across Schwab, and is responsible for leading Schwab Compliance’s engagement with specific key stakeholders based on their assigned business support responsibilities. Certain roles may have specific subject matter expertise or licensing requirements.

What you have

Ideal Profile & Key Experiences:

  • Minimum 15 years of related work experience in compliance, and risk management and anti-money laundering; and a minimum of 10 years in a leadership capacity in environments of similar scale and complexity.

  • Experience in leading a sophisticated compliance function within a wealth management and/or advisory enterprise encompassing product development and distribution efforts operating through multiple entities.

  • Demonstrated success in transforming organizations in a highly collaborative environment to influence compliance and controls while building strong internal and external partnerships and providing coaching and guidance to varied stakeholders.

  • Deep competencies in financial services; securities laws and regulations; anti-money laundering and privacy.

  • Thrives on initiating, building, and cultivating strong authentic relationships inside and outside the group; highly collaborative; navigates and activates alignment across organizational silos.

  • Proven ability to find a balance in developing programs effectively meeting potentially differing regulatory requirements and expectations while being workable for business partners.

  • Courageous leader who develops followership and builds high performing, diverse, cross-functional work teams of both direct and not direct team members rallied around the strategy.

  • Relationship-oriented senior executive leader who manages complex, multistakeholder issues with resilience, embraces others’ perspectives and understands the limits to their own points of view.

  • An exceptional communicator able to effectively persuade and influence across channels with a purpose. Competence in interacting with and influencing senior leaders across business lines through innovative and creative means.

  • Strong emotional intelligence and senior level executive presence.

  • Purpose driven leader who displays confidence and courage in business and talent decisions, actions, and communications with a demonstrated ability to take decisive action when needed including championing ideas, position, or dissent.

  • Strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment, making decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.

  • Possess strong business drivers and perspectives combined with broad management and commercial skills, and an ability to bring a strategic focus to the function and be capable of adding value to the business.

  • Anticipates the possible demands and outcomes of a particular task or situation – plans and prioritizes appropriately.

  • Client focused; able to build relationships and establish trust, respect, competence, and confidence effectively and quickly.

  • An undergraduate degree is required, preferably in Business/Finance/Economics or related disciplines, post-secondary degree, e.g., JD, MBA or equivalent, viewed favorably.

  • Series 7 and 24 or equivalent
