The Security Architect role acts as liaison between the business and technology from a security perspective, maintains an overview of the environment as a whole and its security aspects, understands business strategy and how it relates to security strategy, acts as a liaison between appropriate regulatory bodies, IT auditors, and business stakeholders, educates IT and enterprise roles on the need for (and consequences of) reducing information-related risk, and ultimately drives organizational change at all levels of the business.
The Security Design team provides strategic planning, technology standards, and an architecture framework for security at Charles Schwab. This includes working with business units, subsidiaries, other Technology departments, and vendors to develop strategies for security on all platforms and systems, budget creation, new product selection and validation.
Security Designers drive beneficial security change into the business through the development or review of architectures to ensure that they fit business requirements for security, mitigate risks, conform to the relevant security standards, and balance information risk against the cost of appropriate counter-measures.
What you’ll do:
This is an individual contributor role whose primary duty will be to create and maintain the Schwab Cybersecurity Services local security governance board within the Security Design team, which will provide immediate review, oversight and assurance for technology solutions prior to them receiving technology governance approval.
Information Security Governance Responsibilities:
Assist in the development and management of the Security Governance Board
Coordinate and provide IT security information to the program manager
Perform annual review of the security program
Coordinate, perform, and communicate any changes or additions to all appropriate stakeholders and systems of record
Update the program on changes or pending changes to Information Security legislation or policy guidelines
Operational Security Responsibilities:
Assist program manager in identifying and prioritizing risks from the basis for determining appropriate mitigation actions to take.
Coordinate with requestors on the requirements for safeguarding the integration and use of 3rd party products
Secondly, the role will:
Be a dedicated security designer and advisor responsible for the development, maintenance and consultation of one or more technology alignments within the Firm (i.e. Desktop, Mobile, Crypto).
Work closely with Security Design Technical Directors and team members, and represents the department in cross functional meetings and consultations as subject matter experts. Design secure solutions in support of customer initiatives using industry best practices and Schwab’s current IT Security Policy and Standards. Provide technical analysis of existing and future security products and services as well as participate in benchmarking exercises to align Security Services to industry best practices. Defining and designing secure service offerings with the primary tenants of availability, integrity and confidentiality.
Assist in designing Schwab Technology Services (STS) security products and services and responsible for ensuring the solutions are technically sound and can be integrated into other STS products and services. Enable other functional product areas to create and design secure solutions. Provide analysis of vendors and suppliers technical capabilities for services provided to Schwab as well as products under proposal. Participate in the proposal management process to deliver customer-centric solutions, based upon dynamic business needs, through a transparent business partnership with end-to-end accountability and focused customer service.
Participate in business unit project teams as well as proactively meet with internal business IT and STS customers to integrate security controls into their products and services during development of an initiative. Participate in the technical evaluation and testing of hardware and software for possible impact on systems security or for risk to intellectual property. Maintain relationships with Internal and External Audit Partners. Participate as a member of the Schwab Computer Incident Response Team as needed. Active participation in the outside security community. 24 x 7 availability for security emergencies/incidents may be required. 5-10% travel may be required.
What you have:
Demonstrates proficiency with the IT Security Common Body of Knowledge required
Demonstrates experience in understanding common IT technologies
Intermediate knowledge of Windows and Linux server platforms, and a solid understanding of the TCP/IP protocol suite
Abreast of both old and new security vulnerabilities and continually keep up to date on the latest security best practices and technologies
Knowledge of routing, switching, and bridging within a network
Good knowledge of cryptography as it relates to computer and network security as well as file and email encryption required. The concepts of key management, escrow and shredding should be well understood
Working knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory is a major plus for this role
Working knowledge of Data Layer Protection (DLP) methodologies & mobility platforms
External professional affiliations a plus. Able to think and function in a global marketplace

Excellent verbal and written communications skills
A self-starter, with limited supervision & be able to work effectively in a global diverse environment
Knowledge and/or experience with process improvement and quality control methodologies such as Six Sigma is a plus in this role

Project Management Knowledge Requirements:
General knowledge and experience in PM principles such as planning, tracking and implementation of information security programs
General experience with JIRA, Confluence, Excel, and collaboration/communication tools used by Schwab
General experience with risk management and mitigation
Operating a governance board structure including:
Leading monthly or ad-hoc meetings
Maintaining meeting minutes and outcomes
Maintaining site for completed and in-process reviews (Confluence)
Manage the work of assigning security architects to perform security reviews on products brought to the board
Provide metrics on operations and outcomes of reviews
Prefer the following certifications: CISA, CISM, CCNA, or SANS certifications. Minimum 5 years of advanced Information Technology experience in large scale environments Associates, Bachelor or Advanced degree in a related discipline such as Computer Science or Technology is a plus.
